Sisters Support 2014 Empty Bowls Dinner

Since the early 1990s, Sisters of Divine Providence have been participating in the annual Empty Bowls Dinner, a simple soup and bread supper which raises funds to fight hunger in the Pittsburgh area. In most years, six to eight Sisters have attended. Proceeds from the fundraiser are split between Just Harvest and the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.

One of the special features of the meal is that each person who attends is invited to choose a ceramic bowl to take home. These bowls are made and donated by potters from around the area. Our own Sister Charlotte Tolliver, along with some students from her ceramics classes, has made a number of bowls in prior years. This year, for the first time, a group of other Sisters is joining Sister Charlotte in making bowls to donate. As they work on this project, Sister Charlotte is teaching the Sisters some of the basic techniques involved in creating a piece of pottery.

The Empty Bowls Dinner also includes a silent auction of special or larger ceramic pieces. Sister Charlotte has often contributed an item for this part of the fundraiser.

For more information about the event or to buy tickets, visit the Empty Bowls Dinner page on the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank website.

If you are interested in learning more about Sister Charlotte's work, Kearns Spirituality Center has posted some photos of Sister Charlotte's pottery, done through her Vessels of Hospitality Ministry.
